# Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) > ATAA is the largest democratically elected Turkish American membership organization in the United States — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1979 that represents over 50 local Turkish American associations and roughly 500,000 Turkish Americans. It fosters cooperation among Turkish American organizations, builds an informed community, and works to promote a balanced, truthful picture of Türkiye and healthy United States–Türkiye relations. ATAA is a non-faith-based, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization (EIN 52-1204665) headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, governed by a Board of Directors and a Board of Trustees and funded by membership dues and donations.
